Laurie Whitwell Makes Prediction About David De Gea’s Future After United Star Rejects New Contract

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea “will” sign a new contract despite turning down the club’s opening offer, according to The Athletic‘s Laurie Whitwell.

The reliable journalist says he expects a “positive conclusion” to negotiations, with the Spaniard keen to remain at Old Trafford beyond the end of the season:

De Gea is currently earning £375,000 a week, and United do have an option to extend his deal for another year, but the Red Devils want the player to take a salary cut.

The 32-year-old’s refusal of United’s opening proposal is not, however, an indication that he won’t accept a lower wage, only that he is seeking a compromise.

Manager Erik ten Hag did reportedly have doubts about De Gea following the Dutchman’s arrival at the club last summer but Whitwell claims that he is now “happy” to see the club’s number one remain with the team for the long term.

United have been linked with the likes of Brentford’s David Raya and Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel in recent weeks but it appears those targets are only being looked at just in case a deal can’t be reached with De Gea.
