Laurie Whitwell Claims Memphis Depay’s Return To United Has Been Scuppered By One Key Demand

Manchester United are not expected to pursue a move for Barcelona forward Memphis Depay with the Dutchman likely to demand a “multi-year contract”, according to The Athletic‘s Laurie Whitwell.

The former Red Devils star, who left Old Trafford five years ago, has been touted for a return to Manchester (with the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea having also been linked). However, Whitwell claims United have prioritised an approach for Wout Weghorst as he is willing to only join on a short-term basis:

You do feel that, with the Glazers looking to sell up, the club are unwilling to commit to any long-term signings whatsoever. Some reports have suggested that Depay could even be available on a free transfer in January, despite having six months remaining on his current deal at Barca, but it seems the United are unwilling to give him a suitable contract.

With an agreement for Weghorst looking increasingly likely, it appears as though a decision has been made to secure a low-cost loan to strengthen the frontline.
