‘Just A Matter Of Time’ United And Chelsea Set To Miss Out As PL Rival Closes In On 12M Transfer

Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier is on the verge of completing a move to Newcastle United, according to ESPN.

The website claims it is now “just a matter of time” before the England international finalises his return to the Premier League, with Atletico already looking to sign a replacement.

Trippier has been a long-term target for Manchester United, and it is believed that the club had retained an interest in the 31-year-old even after Ralf Rangnick’s arrival as manager. Chelsea were also mentioned as a possible destination recently.

However, Newcastle have been in pole position for the former Spurs fullback’s signature for a while, with a report last week suggesting a deal was close to being tied up.

ESPN do not mention the potential cost of the transfer but other sources have suggested a fee close to £12m which, if true, would be surprising considering Trippier cost Atletico £20m two and a half years ago.
