Jose needs to pull transfer rabbits out of the hat

Jose Mourinho has come out this week and talks about a title challenge in the coming season, something that is undoubtedly music to the ears of Manchester United fan’s ears. I have my doubts, largely down to this current squad.

Unless the so called ‘Special One’ is about to pull a few rabbits out of the hat in the transfer market, then this team will only ever challenge the top four at best. A poor defence that was bailed out by De Gea on numerous occasions, a ramshackle of a midfield that is held together by the aging Carrick and while the strike force looks exciting on paper, the likes of Rashford and Martial are continually played out of position to accommodate for Zlatan – who despite his unbelievable ability completely unbalanced the team and made us predictable.

The fact of the matter is that this squad isn’t great, despite the millions spent on it by Moyes, Van Gaal and now Mourinho. Throwing money doesn’t always guarantee an instant return and that is largely down to the previous regimes spending millions on players who have no Premier League experience, therefore they take time to settle in. Herrera is living proof of this; however, if Jose really believes that United are capable of a title challenge then some serious transfer activity is required – in not only selling a large part of the squad – but replacing it with proven Premier League talent like Matic, Alderwiereld and Kane for starters, who will provide a strong spine to a team last season that had none.

The likes of Ross Barkley, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are also possibilities – whilst it continually amazes me that we are not making a concerted effort to bring in the likes of Dele Alli to the club. Can you honestly believe that Sir Alex wouldn’t have made a move on both him and someone Kane in the last 12 months?

I know the transfer window has just opened and it is a little early to make judgments before assessing who he will bring in to the club, but with Mourinho talking up the title chances next season I just think a little reality check is needed, given our current situation as we are still definitely in need of those crucial two or three signings which will give the fans, the manager and the players that extra bit of confidence and belief which will put this already awesome team over the top.
