It may seem the fairytale move but Mourinho must avoid this Manchester United deal

The Premier League season is reaching boiling point and with little over a month left to go thoughts are beginning to turn to the summer market.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has lamented his defence for the most part of his first season at the helm, and looks on course to continue his overhaul of the Old Trafford squad with some additions at the back over the coming months.

Deals for Benfica duo Victor Lindelof and Nelson Semedo were mooted in January and could well return this summer, meanwhile the futures of current Red Devils such as Luke Shaw and Matteo Darmian are yet to be resolved.

After a fantastic season in the top flight, another name has been linked with a move to the red half of Manchester this summer, one who is more than familiar with the club.

Michael Keane, who joined Burnley from Manchester United in 2014 on a loan deal made permanent a year later in 2015, has enjoyed a sensational season under Sean Dyche at Turf Moor, earning his first call up and cap for the national side, starting in a back three against Germany for Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions side.

After impressing in at the highest level of English football, the Clarets are resigned to losing their centre-half this summer, with both Everton and Tottenham also linked alongside United.

Whilst it may seem the perfect story to bring the United academy graduate back to the club and into the first team, like a budget Paul Pogba, it doesn’t seem to add up as a sensible move for Mourinho this summer.

Keane has been impressive, and has been crucial to the relative success of Dyche’s promoted side – who look on course to avoid the drop from the Premier League for the first time in the history of the club – however, that doesn’t make him capable of being a Manchester United first team defender.

The respective styles of the Red Devils and the Clarets are poles apart, to somewhat undermine Keane’s form this season, all he has been asked to do is boot things away from Tom Heaton’s goal behind him, which he has done to great effect.

Meanwhile, to be a success under Mourinho next season the 24-year-old would need to add a whole other dimension to his game. The former Chelsea boss, whilst favouring robust players more often than not, also requires them to be canny with the ball at their feet and look to start an attack from the back.

Take, for example, John Terry under the Portuguese at Stamford Bridge. The Blues skipper, whilst holding nothing back in terms of the physical side of his game, he would not think twice about looking for that cutting ball to get things going at the front.

A move for Keane could well go down a treat with the fans, however, at a reported £30m, Mourinho can do much better for his money and get his United where he wants them a lot quicker in the process.
