“I Didn’t Think He Was Great…” England Urged To Drop United Star In Favour Of Saka For Senegal Clash

TalkSPORT pundit Jason Cundy believes England manager Gareth Southgate should bench Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford for the World Cup round of 16 clash against Senegal.

Despite scoring a brace in the last group match versus Wales, Cundy feels that Rashford’s all-round performance left a lot to be desired, and he feels Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka should come back into the team:

“Up front against Senegal, I’d start Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden and Harry Kane. I wouldn’t start Marcus Rashford. Who would you start him ahead of? You can’t not play Saka for how well he’s done going into the tournament for Arsenal. There’s been a lot of talk about Rashford this week but I didn’t think he was great against Wales. You could have pulled him off at half-time. Yes, he scored two goals but I wanted to see a performance from him as well as goals and that wasn’t the case.”

It would be a massive surprise if Rashford was dropped by Southgate, considering his strong display on Tuesday evening, and Cundy is being very harsh in saying he was poor.

While there is definitely adebate to be had about England’s best front three, you have to go with the players who are performing well. It should be pointed out that Saka didn’t exactly impress in the 0-0 draw against the USA, despite scoring twice in the group opener versus Iran. It is, therefore, not as straightforward a decision as Cundy is making out.
