Gerrard admits hatred towards United duo

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is not the most popular man in Manchester by any stretch. The former England skipper is known as one of the best midfielders of all time, and due to Liverpool’s fierce rivalry with the Red Devils it is understandable why a United fan might be excused for not having too many kind words for the scouser.

Gerrard scored six times against United during his time at Liverpool, but he will often be remembered for his last ever appearance against them, when he was sent off after just 38 seconds of coming on from the bench – a game United ended up winning 3-0.

The midfielder is now a pundit for BT Sport, and has admitted he felt ‘hatred’ towards former Manchester United captains Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand during his playing career, despite being team-mates with the duo when on England duty.

Gerrard’s Liverpool rarely finished above Manchester United whilst he was at the club, signalling the dominance that United had during that era. However, as time has gone on, all three have made their moves from football to punditry, and Gerrard admits he now gets on well with the former United captains.

“When you’re lining up in the tunnel against Rio and Gary Neville you want to do everything in your power to beat them, there’s hatred there, that’s exactly how it is,” Gerrard said.

“When you meet up for England at that time, you pretend you like them, but your career finishes, their career finishes and your friendship starts for real.”

“I’ve got nothing but respect for Rio as a player, he played for a top club all his life, he’s a good fella as well. I’m enjoying the role at BT with him as well.”

Gerrard will always be remembered as an all time great, but there is something so sweet about the fact he never really had one over United whilst he was at Liverpool.
