“Genius” Pogba must do more insists former France international

Former France international and Birmingham City star Christophe Dugarry has described Paul Pogba as a “genius” player, but insists he must do more to prove himself as one of the world’s best.

Pogba starred for United at the weekend, scoring a sensational brace to lead a miraculous tunraround against rivals Manchester City, in which Jose Mourinho’s side came from two goals behind to win 3-2 at The Etihad.

While the Frenchman was certainly at his enigmatic best on Saturday, that however hasn’t always been the case since his world record switch to Old Trafford.

Since joining the Red Devils in 2016, Pogba has struggled to find consistent form.

Earlier this season, Pogba was dropped by Jose Mourinho in favour of youngster James McTominay after a string of poor performances, only returning to the side mid-way through last month.

And during his first season at Old Trafford, the 25-year-old was also heavily criticised his his fluctuating form during a campaign in which he managed only eight goals in all competitions.

Dugarry, a World Cup and European Championship winner with France, insists Pogba must perform more consistently if he is to live up to his £89 million price tag.

Dugarry told RMC: “He’s an alien, a player out of the ordinary, but he annoys me, because I know he’s capable of doing a hundred times more. He’s a genius, but when is he going to realise it?

“When he started becoming a marketing player, he lost that rage he had at Juventus.”

Pogba too has admitted his own frustration at his and his side’s oscillating form, saying he believes they could have pushed City all the way for the title had they been more consistent throughout the year.

“I feel very happy but there is one side of me that is disappointed too because, with a performance like we had in the second half, if we had done this all season, I think we would be fighting for the title with City or we’d be just in front of them, but this is football. It happens.

“And we have to carry on like this, we’re learning. I’m very happy today.”
