Gary Neville Thinks United Won’t Even Finish Third Next Season Unless This Key Squad Problem Is Addressed

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville believes a lack of squad depth will prevent the Red Devils from challenging for the title next season.

United have suffered a dip in form in recent games, which could be attributed to tiredness, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer unable to rotate his players.

Neville thinks that even with three or four more signings in the summer, it may only push them up to challenging for third and second place:

“I don’t think this Manchester United team at this moment can challenge for the title next season. It needs more additions and more of the right additions. To be fair to Ole, in the time he has been at the club, I think the players he has brought in have improved his team enormously.”

“I think that he needs three or four more of those as a minimum before he can even think about getting up into third or second place. My concern isn’t really for the front three or the midfield three, it’s the depth and the drop that you have beneath that talent.”

It has been an intense period of fixtures, with Premier League teams playing every few days, and it isn’t a surprise that it has taken its toll on the players.

On top of that, the lack of depth in the squad was exposed when Solskjaer did try to rotate in the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea last weekend.

Fans will be hoping that the first team players have just enough energy to get over the line, in order to finish in the top four, by getting a result against Leicester on Sunday.
