Free-Agent Defender Set To Follow Depay To United

Manchester United could be set to sign Dutch defender Ron Vlaar on a free transfer. The centre back’s contract at Aston Villa is up at the end of the season, and it looks increasingly likely that the player will leave the club.

Louis van Gaal will almost certainly be looking towards new defenders in the summer transfer window, and a centre back will be his top priority.

Since the departure of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, United have lacked any real experience at the back.

This has shown over the course of the season to be a slight issue, now it seems Ron Vlaar could provide the much needed experience the young back line need.

The 30-year-old is a Netherlands International, and represented his country at last summers World Cup, where he played a pivotal part in the side finishing 3rd.

Although he may not be the most instantly recognisable defender in the world, Vlaar has provided a solid presence for both club and country, something which LvG may see as a big reason to sign him up. The United boss has previously worked with Vlaar at Netherlands, so will know the player well.

Manchester United have scouted plenty of defenders recently in an attempt to lure new faces into Old Trafford. Names such as Hummels, Otamendi and Varane have been hugely liked with a move, and there is no reason why they won’t end up at United.

However, should Ron Vlaar sign, it could be seen as more of a short term solution, rather than long term.

He may not be the signing every United fan has dreamed of, but Vlaar certainly wouldn’t be out of place at United. Should he become available to sign on a free transfer as well, that would surely be a huge incentive to snap up the Dutchman.
