Five Stats About Mason Greenwood’s Season So Far That Should Excite United Fans

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has had a breakthrough season at Old Trafford, and he is no doubt destined to be a star for the club in years to come.

His 12 goals in all competitions this campaign is an incredible number, considering he is still only 18 years of age.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has tried to ease Greenwood into first-team action slowly with most of his starts coming in cup competitions.

However, the hype surrounding the teenager is justified. Press the next page as we look at five statistics from this season that should excite supporters.

Shot Per Game Average

The best strikers in the Premier League and in the top European leagues, tend to average three shots per 90 minutes or more.

At 2.9, Greenwood is already demonstrating that he is very active in front of goal, and he is not shy of unleashing an effort on goal when he is in a position to do so.

Shots On Target

Along with regular strikes on goal, the best forwards are also very accurate, and Greenwood once again measures up favourably in his record.

The young striker has racked up 58 shots in all competitions this season, with 44.8% hitting the target. His precise shooting is certainly one of his key attributes.

xG (Expected Goals)

Scoring difficult chances, as well as those that are handed to you on a plate, is another indication as to whether a player is a top drawer finisher.

xG measures how many goals a player should score given the chances provided to them. For Greenwood that number this season is 8.52. With his goal total standing at 12, it means he has overperformed by three to four goals; something only elite strikers do.

Passing Accuracy

Greenwood is a very accurate when passing the ball, with the 18-year-old having found a teammate with 87.5% of his 586 passes this season

Although pass completion percentages don’t tell you that much about a player, they can identify those who who are careless in possession or technically deficient. Greenwood is certainly neither.

Offsides

Being able to stay onside is the key element of being a top forward, and Greenwood has been much better at it than his more experienced teammates this campaign.

In his 36 matches, the teenager has averaged 0.4 offsides per 90 minutes, which is a significantly lower number than Anthony Martial (0.51) and Marcus Rashford (0.5).
