Five Facts About Ibrahima Konate After United Reportedly Make Contact With Star’s Agent

Manchester United are interested in RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate, according to reports in the French media. It has been claimed that the Red Devils have been in contact with the 20-year-old’s agent in order to register their interest in the player.

The France Under 21 international has formed an impressive partnership with Dayot Upamecano at the heart of Leipzig’s defence, which has conceded just 26 goals in 25 games this season; the joint best defensive record in the Bundesliga.

Konate would certainly fit the type of profile that United would be looking for, with the centre-back still developing his game and likely to improve in the future.

Press the “next page” as we look at five facts you may not know about the Frenchman.

Konate made his senior debut just over three years ago

The centre-half was born in Paris and came through the youth ranks at lower league side Paris FC. However, he moved to Sochaux in 2014 before making his debut in February 2017.

Konate made 12 appearances in Ligue One in the second half of the 2016/17 campaign.

He moved to Leipzig on a free transfer

Konate’s contract at Sochaux came to an end the summer following his first-team debut, and German club RB Leipzig saw his potential and snapped him up.

The defender went on to make 16 appearances in his first season in Germany, under the guidance of manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Konate is strong in the air

The 20-year-old is 6ft 3 and he is one of the best in the Bundesliga at winning aerial duels against his opponents. Although United do already have Harry Maguire who has a big presence in the air, the Frenchman would certainly add to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s options.

There is no doubt that Konate would have the physicality necessary to play in the Premier League.

He is an expert in intercepting the ball

Despite his height, Konate can match his centre-back partner Upamecano for speed. His long legs and his pace mean he is able to intercept passes and shut down opposition attacks.

The defender’s strength also means he can shield the ball very well and he will not be knocked off it once he has got in front of his opponent.

Konate has performed well at international level

The centre-half has yet to be capped for France at senior level but a call up from manager Didier Deschamps is unlikely to be far away.

Konate has made nine appearances for the Under 21s so far and he even captained the side in a friendly against the Czech Republic back in September.
