Ex-Man United skipper says club should have stuck with Van Gaal

Manchester United have started the season in fantastic form, winning all three of their opening Premier League matches, and Jose Mourinho’s side have certainly shown a vast improvement on the performances they showed last season.

The Red Devils struggled in the league campaign last term, eventually finishing sixth, but enjoyed success in the cup competitions by lifting the League Cup and the Europa League- with the latter earning Mourinho’s men a spot in the Champions League this season.

Despite their improvements shown so far, there’s still a long way left to go in the season and Manchester United certainly have sterner tests ahead of them, as all of their matches so far are games where the Red Devils would have been expected to win.

The club made numerous alterations to their squad over the summer, which included sending captain Wayne Rooney back to boyhood side Everton, and England’s all-time record goalscorer has claimed Manchester United should have given former manager Louis Van Gaal more time.

The Dutch boss took charge at Old Trafford following the 2014 World Cup, where Holland reached the semi-finals, and struggled in his debut season in the Premier League before guiding Manchester United to their first trophy in the post Sir Alex Ferguson era by lifting the FA Cup in 2016.

However Van Gaal was replaced by Jose Mourinho that summer, who had left defending champions Chelsea midway through the season, and Rooney believes Manchester United should have stuck with their Dutch boss for an extended period.

“He [Van Gaal] got a lot of stick. I believe if he stayed it would have got better. He looked at all the small details not only off the pitch but on the pitch. I think the one thing he did was keep the standards with the players, he was demanding the best from you every day.”

“Jose came in and last season in the league we struggled and weren’t consistent enough. Obviously in the cups United did well.”

Manchester United fans may disagree with the statement, particularly as Jose Mourinho’s side appear to be on the up and the Portuguese boss has a strong record of winning the league title in his second season in charge at clubs throughout his career.
