Done Deal – Welcome Jose Mourinho

Things have been made official by Manchester United who posted pictures of Jose Mourinho holding a Devils shirt today. Ed Woodward also proudly presented the Portuguese manager as being the perfect fit for Manchester’s needs. To be fair, there was little doubt that anyone else would be appointed after LVG’s departure. The only shred of doubt came from the fact that United missed out on The Special One right after Sir Alex Ferguson left. There would have been a possibility for that to happen again as despite an uneven performance for Chelsea, offers were pouring for Mourinho. Some rumors even say that a pre-contract was signed even when van Gaal was still in charge just not to lose the Portuguese boss once more.

You cannot help look back into the past when Sir Alex Ferguson left and David Moyes took over. Everyone said: Sign Mourinho, sign Mourinho! After a different manager was appointed and no offer was made for the Special One who was free of contract at that time, everyone said you could see the disappointment in Mou’s eyes. That is somewhat confirmed with his first statement since signing with Manchester United: “To become Manchester United manager is a special honour in the game. It is a club known and admired throughout the world. There is a mystique and a romance about it which no other club can match. I have always felt an affinity with Old Trafford; it has hosted some important memories for me in my career and I have always enjoyed a rapport with the United fans. I’m looking forward to being their manager and enjoying their magnificent support in the coming years.” The 53-year-old is featured on Manchester United’s website right next to this statement and a small reminder of why he should be able to take United back to the top: 30 trophies in 16 years. With a success rate of 65,4% and a 14,9% loss rate, this guy has won it all. Fortunately, United has always been his dream destination and fortunately, he has never won the Champions League with a Premier League team. That will be part of the motivation he will bring to the table.

It is to be seen what will happen now as transfers are expected to go down. Ibrahimovic seems to be on top of the list. Known as a huge admirer of Sir Alex Ferguson, Mourinho is likely to follow in the steps of the United legend who did not back away from bringing to Old Trafford players like Henrik Larsson, Laurent Blanc or Michael Owen who despite being well over 30, were given the opportunity to help the Devils in their pursuit of trophies.
