‘Done Deal’ – Manchester United Move Closer To Defender

According to reports, Nathaniel Clyne’s transfer to Manchester United is a ‘done deal’. United insider, David McDonnell, revealed live on MUTV on Tuesday night that United have as good as sealed the deal for the right back.

Antonio Valencia seems to be Louis van Gaal’s first choice right back. His performances this season have generally been very adequate. Although the Ecuadorian is a natural winger, he seems to have adapted well to the defensive role. On the other hand, Rafael’s position in the squad looking like a lost cause, as the former starter now looks as if his time at United will be up come the summer. However well Valencia has done, it is clear LvG has been monitoring the situation of other right backs continually throughout the season.

Various names such as Seamus Coleman, Dani Alves and Gregory van de Wiel have been linked with United moves, however Clyne was always seen as the favourite to take the spot, should Chelsea not pip United to the youngster.

Clyne has been very impressive at Southampton, he has stood out as one of the best right backs in the league this season. He’s definitely played his part in ensuring the Saints have the best defence in the league.

Manchester United have always shown an interest in Clyne. It was widely reported that under Sir Alex Ferguson, United tried to sign the Englishman, who eventually declined United in favour of a Southampton move.

There’s no doubt that the defender has not only bags of ability, but also bags of potential still to live up to. At just 24, it would be a fantastic addition to the United squad and Clyne would come into a position that United definitely need filling. One things for sure, the signing of Clyne would surely mean the end of Rafael’s time at Old Trafford, a huge shame considering how well the Brazilian looked in the right back spot particularly under SAF, but with the Englishman coming in I’m sure no one would complain.
