Diego Godin makes United confession

When Manchester United were linked with a deadline day move with Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin last week, fans’ first reaction must have been excitement, followed by that horrible feeling of it being too good to be true.

As it turned out, it certainly was too good to be true, and within an hour of being linked with a sensational move to United, Godin was touted to sign a new contract in Spain – which he subsequently did.

It’s an all too familiar story for United, who often find themselves linked with stars only for them to receive bumper contracts not long after. Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo are classic examples of such practice.

But with Godin, it really never felt like a deal that could’ve been done. From the offing there was something odd about the rumours – why would a 32-year-old want to leave Spain so suddenly after 11 glorious years there?

United clearly wanted to sign a new centre-back in the summer, and it’s thought that Godin’s agent used that as a plot to get his client a new deal, with just 12 months left on his current one.

However, Godin has insisted that he turned down United for ‘personal reasons’ – and has not yet signed a new deal with Atletico.

Speaking ahead of Atletico’s Super Cup clash with Real Madrid, Godin denied talk of him and his agent using United.

“I have not renewed,” Godin said. “I have had offers, although I have decided to stay for personal reasons, and I am only thinking about the final.

“But I have not extended my contract. I saw that news came out but I do not know where it came from.”
