Defender Gives Hint About United Future

Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian has opened up about his future at the club, saying he is not planning on leaving any time soon.

Thw 27-year-old joined United under Louis van Gaal two summers ago from Torino. He cost the Reds a fee of around £12m, but failed to really make an impact in the team under the Dutch manager.

When Mourinho came in it was much of the same, with the Italian defender having a fairly average time at the club and never really nailing a first-team spot. However, during the second half of the season, Darmian managed to make more of an impact in the first team and his Europa League final performance impressed many – perhaps enough to keep him at the club beyond the summer.

This summer a number of clubs have been linked with a move for the versatile defender, who can play either side of defence and also as a midfielder. Juventus, Inter Milan and Barcelona have been touted to a move for Darmian, but the defender looks to have dismissed those reports and wants to stay at the club.

After the Super Cup loss to Real Madrid, Darmian told Mediaset Premium: “In difficult moments, I always worked hard and tried to take every opportunity I had.”

“Last season I did end up playing my games, it was a good end to the campaign and I am building on that.”

“Nobody likes to lose, especially when there is an important trophy up for grabs. We wanted to start strong, but instead only really got into the game towards the end and unfortunately missed a potential equaliser.”

“I’m pleased that Manchester United consider me to be off the market, just as I’m pleased by the interest of Italian clubs.”

“In any case, there was never anything concrete, so there’s no point talking about the transfer market. I see myself at Manchester United, I’m happy here.”
