De Gea gives United the edge over Liverpool

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is one of the best in the world and will give Mourinho’s side the edge over Liverpool in the derby match this weekend, says former United goalkeeping coach Tony Coton.

Coton was once part of Manchester United’s team in 1996, but never made a first team appearance after being second fiddle to Peter Schmeichel. However, as a goalkeeper making over 500 appearances in the English divisions, he is remembered as one of the greats.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the 56-year-old gave his opinion on David de Gea – United’s current No.1. Coton believes that the Spaniard is one of the best in the world, and could well make the difference this weekend when Liverpool meet United.

“He [de Gea] is a model professional, his consistency levels are phenomenal. He has proved to be a great, great goalkeeper, he’s fantastic, his consistency is the key,” said Coton.

“There have been rumours that he’s going to be leaving each summer but the best bit of business Manchester United do is to keep him there. He is without doubt one of the best keepers in the world.”

“The biggest thing about him is that he stands big, he transfers the pressure onto the forwards, he never sells himself and any goal he concedes is a well earned goal.”

“He simplifies goalkeeping, he doesn’t try to make anything spectacular and I’ve been very, very impressed.”

Coton also discussed Liverpool’s goalkeeping situation, saying that the club are suffering by not knowing who is their best ‘keeper out of Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius.

“It’s been a talking a point for a few weeks now who is the number one, I don’t know if Jurgen Klopp knows that.”

“It doesn’t do a back four any good at all that they keep swapping the goalkeepers. Both are good goalkeepers in their own right but they need to nail that place down.”
