David Ornstein Names Three United Players Who Are Set To Be Offered Weekly Contract Extensions

The Coronavirus outbreak has had a multitude of different knock-on effects on the game of football, and one of them is the issue of contracts.

Player deals tend to last until June 30th in Europe and with the possibility of the football season being extended well into the summer, it puts clubs in a difficult position.

The solution that Manchester United have come up with, according to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein, is to offer some players weekly contract extensions.

Three players, in particular, could well be impacted. Angel Gomes and Nemanja Matic have deals at Old Trafford that expire in June, while Odion Ighalo is on loan for a similar period of time.

United are said to be in negotiations to secure Matic and Gomes for the long term, but it seems that if no agreement can be reached, they will request to keep them on weekly contracts until the season is concluded.

Ighalo’s situation is slightly more complicated, as United will need to take up their option to buy him at the end of the loan period, but they may look to extend his stay for longer.
