Could Lukaku Be The Striker United Need To Sign To Take The Goal-Scoring Pressure Off Ibrahimovic Alone Or Is Griezmann The Man?

With Manchester United out of the FA Cup, the only real focus for success this season remains on their Europa League bid, having already picked up the first major honour of the season with the EFL Cup.

Whilst, of course, the race for the top four will be a priority at this stage no one can say for certain how that will end up, although you can be pretty sure the Red Devils will be contesting in some form of European competition next season.

With that in mind, whilst Jose Mourinho arguably has the best squad in the Premier League – considering the strength in depth at his disposal, additions will be necessary over the summer in order to ensure a return to the top spots at home and on the continent for the biggest club in world football.

One link which will not go away, for the entire summer, is that of Everton striker Romelu Lukaku. The Belgium international, who is on the books of super-agent Mino Raiola – who conveniently looks after a trio of Manchester United stars in Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba, has snubbed a new offer at Goodison Park, days after his representative confirmed he was on the verge of committing to the £140k-a-week deal.

The sticking point in Lukaku’s camp, supposedly, was a discussion over a release clause in the contract, with the Merseyside club wanting to slap a £90m valuation in there, whilst the player wanted no more than £70m.

With so many valuations flying around, no one can say how much a buying club would land a deal for, however, it’s clear that it would be expensive.

Considering the spending spree Mourinho went on last summer, which has certainly paid off, the powers that be at Old Trafford will need to make sure that any big money deals this summer are perfect for the club.

There is likely to be somewhat of a fire-sale from the red half of Manchester this summer, with the futures of Matteo Darmian, Luke Shaw and Wayne Rooney all up in the air, however, that would still be no excuse for frivolous spending.

With that in mind, is Lukaku a perfect fit for the Red Devils? Despite his national team sharing the same nick-name, there is little else to make you think it would be a healthy relationship.

The 23-year-old thrives off of powerful charges forward, more often than not on the break, whereas his first touch has often been  a crucial let down.

Considering Mourinho’s side often dominate games and have the lion’s share of the ball, they need a striker who will not be wasting chances with balls into his feet.

Of course Lukaku would score goals for Mourinho, he’d more than likely stay as one of the best strikers in the league, however, with United looking to become the best of the best again, given that the deal is likely to swallow up a large chunk of the Portuguese’s budget this summer, spending the money elsewhere on some, cheaper, more intricate players could pay huge dividends going forward.

So it remains to be seen if Jose wants to sign a player he deemed surplus to requirements when he was at Chelsea selling him to Everton for £28 million as the Telegraph reported not to mention the fact that Chelsea themselves are credited with a big interest in bringing the powerhouse Belgian back to Stamford Bridge. The summer window is certainly going to be interesting as United look set to add a striker to take the goal-scoring responsibilities off Ibrahimovic alone but who will it be – Griezmann, Lukaku, A.N.Other?

Having Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Romelu Lukaku as your two main strikers would give United the best striking duo in the League you would have to say but United may need Champions League football to entice the powerful Belgian to come to Old Trafford something which Chelsea will be able to offer which could be the difference in Lukaku’s decision to move clubs.

However many will feel United would be better served to sign French superstar Antoinne Griezmann and given the play over recent seasons of the Atletico Madrid man it is hard to argue plus he has Champions League experience and Jose Mourinho is known to be a big fan as is Paul Pogba so it will be interesting to see which way United opt to go.
