Could Kane prove very able at Old Trafford?

It is not often that you hear Paul Merson talk a lot of sense; however, for once in my life I found myself nodding in approval whilst reading his weekly column. The Sky Sports man feels that Jose Mourinho should simply splash the cash on Harry Kane – a sentiment I fully agree with.

There is a lot of talk about Morata and Lukaku moving to Old Trafford this summer – with Ibrahimovic being released and Rashford being preferred on the wing. Why few would question the signing of the aforementioned, I do question as to whether we would be buying the best that is out there. Morata is an unknown quantity and whilst Lukaku has proved himself in the Premier League – although rarely turns up in the big games – Kane scores for fun and has won successive Golden Boots.

Harry Kane England

Just like the mid-90s when we were chasing Shearer to spearhead our attack, Kane represents the modern day equivalent and like the former will guarantee you at least 25-30 goals a season. What is even more impressive about Kane – besides scoring 29 goals in 30 games – is the tremendous attitude the player possesses, with no element of big time Charlie about him. Compare the way he conducts himself to the likes of Jesse Lindgaard and we have the ultimate professional and a shining example to other players at the club that hardwork and application will get you far in this world.

Obviously Tottenham aren’t going to sell him on the cheap with Merson suggesting that it will cost the best part of £100m to bring him to Old Trafford. Why others may flinch at the asking price, the fact remains that here is a player who does it at the top-level week in week out and more importantly does it against the top teams never getting marked out of games.

He is the full package in every sense of the word and he is now starting to deliver at international level for England and has been made captain for recent games – a testament to the respect his peers have for him. It’s hard to believe he is still only twenty-three years so if he was acquired now you would expect that if he stays at the club for at least 10yrs then suddenly the price tag doesn’t seem so bad.

The prospect of Kane linking up with Rashford would be mouth watering, not only for club but country too. To me Kane feels like the perfect signing to complement our strike force and although Merson is renowned for talking a lot of tosh at times, I truly believe he has hit the nail on the head with this one.
