Comparison of Manchester United managers since Sir Alex Ferguson retired

When doing a comparison of Manchester United managers since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, it really does not make for good reading for the fans. The club has had several different managers – they are now on their 6th manager since Sir Alex left. Here is a brief overview of each manager’s tenure at the club:

David Moyes: Moyes was appointed as Manchester United manager in 2013, following Ferguson’s retirement. However, he was unable to replicate Ferguson’s success and was sacked after just 10 months in charge.

Ryan Giggs: Giggs served as interim manager for the final four games of the 2013-14 season, following Moyes’ sacking.

Louis van Gaal: Van Gaal was appointed as Manchester United manager in 2014 and spent two seasons at the club. During his time at Old Trafford, he won the FA Cup, but was unable to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. He was sacked at the end of the 2015-16 season.

Jose Mourinho: Mourinho was appointed as Manchester United manager in the summer of 2016 and spent two and a half seasons at the club. During his time at Old Trafford, he won the Europa League, the League Cup, and the Community Shield, but was unable to win the Premier League. He was sacked in December 2018.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: Solskjaer was appointed as caretaker manager in December 2018, following Mourinho’s sacking. He was later given the job on a permanent basis. During his time at the club, Solskjaer did not win any trophies during his three years in charge, losing four of five semi-finals and the single final his team made it to in that period, and despite being backed heavily in the transfer market he struggled to consistently compete for the Premier League title.

Erik Ten Hag: The Dutchman joined United in the summer of 2022 and had to manage the Cristiano Ronaldo affair which most fans agree he dealt with in a classy manner. Ten Hag has got United into the top 4 for the first time this season after their impressive 3-0 win over Bournemouth this week. We shall see if he can replicate his success in the Eredivisie.
