Clyne Set To Join Liverpool

Nathaniel Clyne is set to join Liverpool in a move that would see him be the 4th player to join the Reds from Southampton in just 12 months.

Clyne is currently away on holiday, and betting has been suspended for the defender to join Liverpool. The Merseyside club are believed to have had a bid in the reigion of £12.5m accepted by the Saints, and will wait until he returns from his holiday to discuss personal terms.

Liverpool were reported to have bid around £10m for Clyne earlier in the month, a bid which was rejected by Southampton. However this fee is believed to have been upped, and Southampton are happy for the right back to leave after already signing a replacement this summer in Cedric Soares, a right back from Sporting Lisbon, who cost around £3.5m.

Clyne will become Liverpool’s sixth summer signing in what has already been a very busy transfer period for the Reds.

The news will come as a surprise to United fans, who would’ve fancied themselves as the favourites for Clyne. United are said to be in for a right back this summer, and the Englishman definitely would’ve fit the bill.

Clyne, who is just 24, is a full international for England and has raised eyebrows from his consistency last season in the league. He was unlucky not to make the Premier Leagues team of the year, narrowly missing out to Chelsea’s Ivanovic.

It has to be said that if Liverpool do sign Clyne, and United fail to make a right back signing, then that may come back to bite United. At £12.5m, he would’ve been a great addition to the side, let alone being a homegrown player.

It remains to be seen what LvG has in store for the right back department, but I for one have been left slightly puzzled by United not making a move for Clyne.
