Club Chief Sends Out Defiant Message As United Are Linked With Swiss Midfield Maestro

Borussia Monchengladbach sporting director Max Eberl has said he expects Denis Zakaria to stay with the German club next season if they qualify for the Champions League.

Reports in Germany claim Manchester United are leading the race for the Swiss international, with Liverpool, Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund also keen, but Eberl is hopeful of keeping the 23-year-old:

“I think that there is a very good chance that Denis will still be with us next year if we qualify for the Champions League.”

Gladbach are currently fourth in the Bundesliga, taking up the final Champions League place, but there are major doubts over whether the season will be completed due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

United’s interest in Zakaria is believed to be the result of doubts over Nemanja Matic’s future at the club. Talks are said to be ongoing over a new contract for the Serbian, whose current deal expires in the summer.

The Red Devils do have the option of extending his stay for a further year but it is believed the club are keen to keep hold of him for a longer period.
