Cillessen Move To United ‘Likely’

Manchester United’s goalkeeping fiasco looks set to rumble on as the latest round of reports this afternoon indicate that Ajax’s Jasper Cillessen is likely to make a move to Old Trafford this summer, regardless of whether or not David De Gea stays or goes.

Louis van Gaal has already openly admitted that United’s No 2 Victor Valdes is set to leave the club after not following the Dutchman’s philosophy. With that spot vacant, and United’s apparent acceptance that goalkeeper David De Gea will leave either this summer or next, it could leave the door open for Cillessen to come in.

The 26-year-old was made Netherland’s No 1 keeper under Louis van Gaal, and it is believed that the United manager thinks highly of the stopper. Various bookies around the UK also firmly believe that Cillessen is to be United’s next goalkeeper, with the Dutchman currently the firm favourite.

Ajax manager Frank de Boer has other ideas for Cillessen, a player he is desperate to keep a hold of. The 45-year-old had this to say:

“For us it would be a disaster if that’s going to happen because it’s already very difficult to find a good goalkeeper, especially if you have the best goalkeeper in Holland.”

“We want to keep him and he wants to stay, but if Manchester United come with a bag of money it can be difficult.”

“We have to wait but the transfer period still has a long way to go.”

However, despite the increasing rumours surrounding Cillessen, the goalkeeper admits he has heard nothing concrete about a move to Manchester.

“I’m very happy here [at Ajax],” he said.

“I have only heard the rumours so I don’t worry about it until I hear something from my agent. If I don’t hear something from my agent, I enjoy playing at Ajax. I ask my agent, who also is Memphis Depay’s, and he says we don’t know anything.”

“Of course, it’s a great club, Manchester United, but I cannot do anything with rumours.”

“It would be a great step [to join United].”
