Manchester United’s decision to offer David De Gea a lower salary is part of a new policy that will cap all player wages at £200,000 a week, according to reports.
Cristiano Ronaldo was earning £500,000 a week during his time at Old Trafford, substantially more than anyone else, and it is believed that the disparity between different players’ earnings may have affected the harmony within the first-team squad.
While most supporters on Twitter agree with the decision that has been taken, some have raised concerns that it will rule out United from making offers for some of the world’s superstars:
Brilliant decision 👍🏼

There goes my mbappe dream but hold on, can we give mbappe shares of Man Utd and make him a partner and still bring him? 😭

Finally a bit of sense around wages at this club. Long overdue.

It is probably worth noting that, if a takeover of United does happen, this policy could be rolled back pretty quickly, with the new owners likely to be keen to splash the cash.
From the outside looking in, though, it does seem like a good way of going about things. Ensuring everyone is on equal footing in terms of salary should keep egos in check and lend itself to a better atmosphere in the dressing room.
