As the summer transfer window progresses forthwith, clubs in the Premier League are working feverishly to upgrade their squads and offload unwanted players.

One thing that clubs will always look out for is the potential to bring in players on free transfers. It’s always nice to sign good players – but if you can get them for no fee, it’s even better.

In this piece, we’ll be looking at some of the best free transfers that have taken place in the Premier League during the ongoing summer transfer window.

We’ll be including players who have signed for clubs such as Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton and Hove Albion and Aston Villa in this list.

Ashley Young

First on the list is the most recent free transfer so far – just yesterday, Ashley Young joined Everton on a free transfer from Aston Villa.

An adaptable veteran, the not-so-young Young has played for clubs such as Watford, Manchester United and Inter Milan over the course of his illustrious career.

He could be a fantastic signing for the Toffees. His ability to play in multiple positions, as well as his experience, may prove to be an invaluable asset.

Manor Solomon

Here’s another recent signing – on July 11, Tottenham Hotspur signed Israeli winger Manor Solomon on a free transfer upon the expiration of his contract at Shakhtar Donetsk.

A dynamic winger, Spurs were definitely in need of depth in the attacking department – with the acquisition of Solomon, they appear to have gotten just that.

Last season, the 23-year-old spent the season out on loan with fellow London club Fulham. In total, he scored four goals in 19 Premier League appearances.

James Milner

Here’s a name that will be recognisable to any fan of the Premier League – James Milner may be past his best, but the mercurial Champions League-winner still has plenty left in the tank.

He can play in practically every position on the pitch. Overall, Milner has been deployed at right-back, defensive midfield, central midfield, left-back, on each wing and as a lone striker.

He has played for clubs such as Manchester City, Leeds United and most recently, Liverpool in the past. Reds fans may be sad to see him go – but at 37, it is understandable as to why they moved him on.

Mahmoud Dahoud

Next up is Mahmoud Dahoud – while his performances were not always up to scratch at Borussia Dortmund, for Brighton to get such a good midfielder in his prime years on a free transfer is a great achievement.

A crisp passer of the ball, he lacks somewhat in the defensive side of the game – nevertheless, he is a very creative player who can open up defenses in an instant.

On top of this, Dahoud also has a pair of caps for Germany to his name, with his first international appearance for Die Mannschaft coming in 2020.

Youri Tielemans

Youri Tielemans simply has to top this list. After Leicester City were relegated at the end of the 2022/23 season, Tielemans’ departure on a free was inevitable – Aston Villa were the lucky club who managed to secure his services.

As a creative midfielder, Tielemans is simply a joy to watch. His passing is excellent, but so is his ability to carry the ball – he scores plenty of goals from midfield, too.

At times, Tielemans’ workrate has been questioned – but alongside industrious box-to-box players such as Douglas Luiz and John McGinn, this shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
