Barcelona star confirms Manchester United interest

Barcelona star Samuel Umtiti has confirmed that Manchester United want to sign him this summer, but insists he will be remaining at the Camp Nou next season.

The Frenchman joined Barcelona in the summer of 2016 from Lyon in a €25 million, turning down offers from the Premier League to instead join the La Liga giants.

Seventy-seven appearances in just under two seasons later, and Umtiti has established himself as a key member of the Catalan’s squad – however that hasn’t dampened any rumours of a potential summer departure.

Manchester United have been heavily rumoured to be preparing a bid for the France international with Jose Mourinho keen to bolster his back-line, while both Chelsea and Real Madrid are also understood to be keen on the 24-year-old defender.

Umtiti, however, insists he is going nowhere.

He told Canal FC: “It’s not only Manchester United. Other clubs want me as well, but my sole focus is on Barcelona.

“It was my dream to play at Barca. And I achieved it when I was just 22. I’m very happy here, whenever I play and whenever I train.”

Umtiti’s current contract at the Camp Nou runs until 2021 and contains a €60 million release clause – a fee United would reportedly be willing to meet to bring him to Old Trafford.

“Negotiations for a contract renewal have not started yet,” Umtiti continued, “My release clause is low, but that’s not what I worry about, I focus on the pitch.

“A payout clause does not mean much, everyone is aware of it.

“Maybe there is an interest from Barca [for an extension], but nothing has started.”
