Barcelona and Brazil legend opens up on Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United future

Barcelona and Brazil legend Rivaldo has backed Jose Mourinho to turn things around at Manchester United amidst rumours he could leave Old Trafford before the end of the season.

Mourinho has come under intense scrutiny following United’s 3-2 defeat to Brighton on Sunday, with talk intensifying that the Portuguese could be replaced by former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane.

But Rivaldo, who knows him from their time together at Barcelona, reckons Mourinho can get United’s title bid back on track.

Rivaldo told Betfair: “Jose Mourinho’s future at the club will depend on his results, especially with Zinedine Zidane knocking on the door to replace him.

“The French manager won three consecutive Champions League and is waiting for room at a big club, so the pressure is raising for Mourinho, but I think he still can turn this around.

“I can only speak good things of Jose, from the times we were at Barcelona together, he was always was nice to me and a good friend.

“I consider him a good person and an excellent manager.”

United and Mourinho will be hoping to get their season back on track on Monday night, when they welcome Tottenham to Old Trafford.

Spurs have enjoyed a fine start to the new season, recording wins over both Newcastle and Fulham, but United will be a totally different prospect for Mauricio Pochettino’s side next week, and Rivaldo believes the Red Devils could cause an upset.

He said: “A home win against Tottenham on Monday could be crucial for their season and I believe the Red Devils will end up earning three important points at Old Trafford.

“Alexis Sanchez could make the difference and I’d expect Jan Vertonghen to have a tough night.”
