Manchester United did hold talks with RB Leipzig Timo Werner’s representatives in February, and also made contact when Liverpool pulled out of the deal for the German, according to The Athletic.
However, they report the Red Devils were only interested if they could free up funds, possibly from the sale of Paul Pogba. Instead, Werner is poised to join the Chelsea with the London club having triggered the 24-year-old’s £53m release clause:
Fans on Twitter are unconcerned that United missed out on the German international:

This is a player that would rather go to Liverpool than anywhere else, but won’t coz they won’t offer him the money, so he will go to Chelsea instead because they will, and he thought United would offer that too.
We don’t need another player only here for the money

So we weren't his first choice? No thanks then. We have other priorities this summer like a RW position that hasn't been filled since Ronaldo left. Werner incoming would have hampered Martial and Greenwood's development, so not taking him is the right thing to do.

It’s more than likely that the club’s transfer budget is being saved to sign Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho. With Chelsea having shelled out on Werner, they are highly unlikely to be in the market for the England international as well.
Considering the Red Devils’ priority is to strengthen the right flank, the Manchester club will be delighted that there will be one less rival for their main summer target.
