Even though Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo stole the headlines with his hat-trick against Tottenham yesterday, his teammate Fred also received a lot of plaudits for his performance.
The Brazilian has had an up and down career since moving to Old Trafford, but he was at the top of his game in the 3-2 victory last night, and supporters on Twitter were quick to recognise his contributions:
He’s better than pogba in that no.8 role

Top Class baller, that needs a 6 next to him.

He seemed to get so much better playing that 8, needs to play more there..I’d start him there vs Atletico with pogba playing 10 again

As magnificent yesterday as anonymous last week. Let’s hope that level is maintained twined for rest of season starting with Tuesday night

Not fan of Fred but yesterday he was exceptionally good. I do not know what or how it happened but it was a different Fred.

I was always criticising him and all. But have to give it to him. He has been great recently. Controlling the mid field

You have to give credit where credit is due. Fred was excellent versus Spurs and, if he can put in displays like that from now until the end of the season, then United will have a good chance of finishing in the top four.
However, consistency has always been the 29-year-old’s problem. He wasn’t the only player to go missing after half-time in the derby last weekend but he was poor, nonetheless, and there have been a number of other examples this season.
Fred should be using yesterday’s performance as the benchmark for every game going forward. Hopefully, we’ll see him put a good run of form together in the coming weeks and months.
