6 Facts About Timo Werner As United Try To Beat Liverpool And Barca For The German Goal Machine

Manchester United have tabled a proposal for RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, according to The Athletic.

Liverpool are reportedly the favourites for the 23-year-old, but with the Reds apparently hesitating over whether to sign the German, it could let the Red Devils into the race. Barcelona are also believed to be on forward’s tail, with the player having been in seriously impressive form this campaign.

Werner has spoken out about his future this week, suggesting he would be open to moving to Anfield as he would fit manager Jurgen Klopp’s style of play. However, the German international is apparently still waiting for the Merseysiders to follow up their interest.

If United do edge ahead of their rivals in the race for the striker, what can fans expect? Press the “next page” as we list six facts about Werner:

1) He is available relatively cheaply

Werner has a contract with RB Leipzig until 2023, but when he signed a new deal last summer, a release clause was reportedly put in place.

He is currently available for £51m but the clause is due to expire at the end of April so United will need to move fast in order to secure a transfer.

2) Werner is very prolific

The 23-year-old has 88 goals in 147 appearances for Leipzig, but he has really come into his own this season in front of goal.

Despite there being two and half months left of the season, Werner has already scored 27 and laid on 11 assists in 33 games this campaign.

3) He can play right across the front three

Werner is comfortable playing as the main striker, on the left-wing or in a deeper role, which would certainly come in useful for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

However, must of his best work comes as a central striker, and with United actively looking for an alternative to Anthony Martial, the German looks like the ideal fit.

4) Werner is an experienced international

Despite being relatively young, the German is already a regular for the national team at senior level, having been capped 29 times and scored 11 goals.

Werner has one major tournament under his belt already, the 2018 World Cup, and starred at the Confederations Cup in 2017

5) He is looking to move clubs

All the noises coming out of Werner’s camp is that he is keen to move on from Leipzig in the summer for a bigger challenge.

The German has been with his current side for almost four years since moving from Stuttgart in 2016.

6) Werner is keen on regular first team football

It is believed that the forward wants to be guaranteed first team football if he does move clubs. With neither Liverpool nor Barcelona being able to offer him that, United could well be his best alternative.

The Red Devils will probably, though, need to get Champions League football in order to persuade Werner to move to Old Trafford.
