53 Cap International Shows He Might Be Best Option For Manchester United

There was a lesser spotted name on the team sheet as Manchester United prepared to take on Leeds United. England international Harry Maguire made his return on Sunday afternoon, putting in a solid display as United romped to a 2-0 win at Elland Road.

Both of United’s first choice centre backs, Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, were dropped to the bench for the Red Devils’ game against Leeds. Instead, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw were played in their roles.

Initially, eyebrows were raised. Shaw isn’t a natural centre back and Maguire’s form has been shaky over the past several months to say the least. Not only this, Casemiro also wasn’t on hand to help out the two, as he is still undergoing a three match ban following his red card against Crystal Palace.

Despite the concerns, Maguire and Shaw produced a solid performance at the back for United to keep a clean sheet, despite a couple of hairy moments here and there.

From a pure defensive standpoint, Maguire may be Manchester United’s best centre back. While his technical ability is well below the necessary standard in the Premier League at this point, he’s practically unbeatable in the air and is always present when danger is brewing.

He’s also the team captain – although it’s unclear how long he will retain this role. He will struggle to keep his spot in the team due to the form of Varane and Martinez, but this strong showing against United’s bitter rivals shows he’s got plenty left to offer.
