Will United Legend van Nistlerooy’s Goal Record End?

Looking back on Manchester United’s 2002/03 season they got off to their traditonal slow start but they came good to win the title in the end by 5 points over Arsenal having trailed the Gunners by as many as 8 points at the beginning of March. The main reason for United’s title win was one man – that incredible striker Ruud van Nistleroy who managed to lead the reds with his impressive 25 goals in 34 games.

As we know van Nistlerooy had a streak of scoring 10 games in 10 consecutive games which Jamie Vardy equalled when he scord his 10th goal in 10 consecutive games when he scored last weekend against Newcastle United in thier resounding 3-0 away win.

Although it is very early in the season Vardy has a better goals per game ratio, is taking more shots per game and also rivals van Nistelrooy’s impressive 67% shot accuracy figures – of course this could all change by the end of the campaign.

Never-the-less on Saturday November 28th in the 5pm kick-off on Sky Sports, ironically 2nd placed Manchester United visit the King Power Stadium to face 1st placed Leicester City where the former non-league striker Jamie Vardy could break Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record for scoring in consecutive Premier League games. Check out the infographic below from FootballFanager.com to see the stats at this stage of the season for your self. Remember it was last year in the corresponding fixture where United led 2-1 at half time only to go to lose a mind-blowing 5-3 cracker of game (from a Leicester point of view) to the newly promoted Foxes with Vardy himself naturally getting on the scoresheet – we do not need a repeat.

So Leicester City are sitting pretty on top of the Premier League at this time in the season, but the last time United had such a goal scorer happening United came back to win the League in Beckham’s final year with a midfield of Giggs, Scholes, Keane plus more and strikers of Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Ruud with the then world record acquisition of Rio Ferdinand in their side.
