Will Manchester United Sell Juan Mata?

Manchester United’s midfield has been underperforming despite featuring some of the biggest names in European football. Players like Herrera and Schweinsteiger are yet to live up to expectations and have failed to assist the attack throughout the season. Improvisations have been made, improvisations that made defensive footballers such as Fellaini force themselves through the adversaries’ defensive lines. Since Scholes and Giggs left, there has been a gap between lines, a gap that was supposed to be filled by midfielders like Herrera or Mata. With that in mind, some of them might be on their way in order to make room for new, more enthusiastic players.

It appears that Juan Mata who has two more years left of his contract may already be looking for a new club if rumours are to be believed. The Spaniard is rumoured to be keen on a return to La Liga where Valencia, Atletico and even Barcelona are willing to start negotiations. The Devils could still get a good deal on the 27-year-old who according to Metro, could be replaced by one of two Real Madrid players.

The first could be Isco who is not happy with his situation in Madrid. He is having a hard time finding his way into the starting eleven and is desperate to play more. Surely a move to United would provide him with that opportunity. Currently none of the midfielders have the same skillset and profile Isco has shown in Spain. He comes with a similar price tag to that of Juan Mata and with a great desire to make himself noticed.

The second choice would be James Rodriguez who is also unhappy with his status at the club. More focused on the attack and possibly more versatile than Isco, the Colombian would definitely be a solid replacement for Mata. He’s fast, he’s young and has endless talent. He scores, he provides assists and would work well with Fellaini and Schneiderlin. Compared to his current teammate, he lacks the defensive skills but that is not something to worry about when you have two of the best defensive midfielders backing you up.

Seeing Juan Mata leave still seems highly unlikely as he has often led the team and has held his hand up and delivered key goals when needed, like his recent free kicks. Van Gaal seems to trust the Spaniard as shown by him getting the armband in some games so thankfully it seems Mata will be at the Theatre Of Dreams for some time to come.
