United Seek Revenge Over PSV Eindhoven

Manchester United made their triumphant return to the Champions League to face PSV Eindhoven at PSV Stadion on September 15th, 2015. Unfotunately the match did not go according to plan as even though United played an excellent match overall and dominated for long stretches of the game they eventually came out on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline. That was the first game of the Group B matches and much has happened since.

In summary after United’s 1-0 win over CSKA Moscow on matchday 4 they now sit at the top of Group B with 7 points, a point ahead of PSV Eindhoven and Vfl Wolfsburg and they are 3 points up on CSKA Moscow who have 4 points. So interestingly, at this stage any team could win the group and any 2 teams could qualify for the knockout phase of the competition.

Louis Van Gaal has some good history on his side as United have won 6 of their last seven Champions League home games at the fortress that is Old Trafford and they drew the other game. Another great omen given United’s recent goal scoring issues and striker injuries, United have only failed to score once in their most recent 19 Champions League encounters at the Theatre Of Dreams and that was vs Cluj in December 2012 (0-1). One other omen is that Eindhoven have been on the wrong end of nine of their last 11 Champions League away games, only winning once and drawing once.

Captain Wayne Rooney is the leading English marksman in the Champions League with 30 goals which hopefully he can add to as long as he recovers from his illness and Anthony Martial recovers from his ankle problem to lead United’s attack along with the reinvigorated Memphis who seems to have regained his spark from early in the season after his great strike vs Watford.

We like United to avenge their opening round loss with a 3-1 win. What do you think?
