United Draw Rivals After Beating Midtjylland In The Europa League

Manchester United overcame the 2-1 deficit from last week’s game against FC Midtjylland with a resounding 5-1 win last night thanks to a debut brace from 18 year old Marcus Rashford. United went 3-1 down on aggregate when the Danes scored with their first shot on goal and it looked like it could be a long night for Louis van Gaal’s Red Devils.

Juan Mata missed a first half penalty but United did manage to go to half time 1-1 thanks to a Midtjylland own goal. In the second half it was all United as Memphis put on a great display, showcasing all his talents and revealing why LVG paid the big fee to bring him to Old Trafford. But it was young Marcus Rashford who stole the show after getting the call to start for United after Anthony Martial joined the ever growing injury list with a hamstring strain which hopefully thanks to the careful preventative action will not keep him out too long. Rashford scored 2 excellent goals which were both real centre-forward’s goals, scored from the edge of the 6 yard box with two composed side-footed strikes and the youth team forward was a handful for the Midtjylland defense all night with his pace and power. Hopefully this is the start of a great career for the youngster who certainly looks to have all the tools.

It was only when Ander Herrera scored with his penalty late in the second half that the game was secure for United and Memphis, who won the penalty with his trickery, added the gloss to the game with his deserved strike from outside the box in injury time sealing the 5-1 win on the night and the 6-3 aggregate win.

The reward for United as the BBC report is a round of 16 tie against Liverpool who along with Spurs made it 3 English teams into the draw. It will be the first time that United play Liverpool in Eurpean competition so it should prove rather interesting as both clubs chase a win in the competition which would grant automatic qualification to the Champions League.

United can now approach the game on Sunday against Arsenal with a new-found confidence ready to try and avenge the 3-0 loss from earlier in the season – this could be a big ask given the form of the Gunners and the injury list of the Red Devils but at least van Gaal’s men go into it on the back of two wins.
