Stoke City 1-1 Manchester United: Match Report As Rooney Sets Club Scoring Record

So United were unable to continue the 1 game winning streak they started with Liverpool in the League last weekend as they as they were held to a 1-1 stalemate by Mark Hughes”s impressive tenacous Stoke City team. United perhaps thought they would get an a easy ride against Mark Hughes’ Premier League side but it definitely did not pan out  that way.

Juan Mata unfortunately scored an unfortunate own-goal in the 19 minute and it was a lead the Potters looked like they could hold onto to claim all 3 points. Wayne Rooney’s appearance came from the bench in the second half and he but still delivered a moment of history as looked like crossing before instead he hit a super curling, dipping right-footed shot that flew into the corner of the net against the previously unbeatable Grant in the Stoke Goal.

In a game that Stoke had throughly frustrated United in, with Rooney and others looking rather ordinary Wayne Rooney did try to make a difference but United had been for struggling for so long that Stoke’s stoic defence and United’s wastefulness, and as free-kick awarded just outside the home penalty area looked to be the visitors’ last chance as five minutes of added time ticked down.

So the result was a major disappointent but now the accomplishment has been achieved. As the BBC reported, speaking about the record,

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney said: “It means a hell of a lot. It is a great honour and I am very proud. It is difficult at the minute to be over-pleased because of the result, but in the grand scheme it is huge honour.

“It is not something I expected when I joined. I am proud and I hope there is more to come.

“The players who have played for this club have been world class.”

Current United Boss Jose Mourino said: “The record is the record. It is the record of the biggest club in England and one of the biggest in the world. Before him the record belonged to a legend of English football. Now Wayne becomes a legend of Manchester United.”

Former record-holder Sir Bobby Charlton: “I would be lying to say that I’m not disappointed to have lost the record.

“However, I can honestly say that I’m delighted for Wayne. He deserves his place in the history books.

“He is a true great for club and country, and it is fitting that he is now the highest goalscorer for both United and England.

Let’s hope this is the sign of big things to come from the United Captain in the remainder of the season where he will no longer have to face the constant barrage of questions about the record.
