Martial ‘Didn’t Hesitate’ With United Move

New boy Anthony Martial has admitted that he didn’t hesitate for a second when Manchester United came in for him this summer. The 19-year-old signed for £36m on deadline day, despite being deemed ‘untransferrable’ by his club. However, the youngster says he knew he had to leave Monaco as soon as he heard of United’s interest.

The world’s most expensive teenager has hit the ground running for United so far, scoring 4 goals. Some have suggested that the youngster has already silenced his critics – comparing him to Thierry Henry already. However, Martial has his feet planted on the ground firmly and insists he is not looking to compare himself to such a great at this stage.

“I know Henry is a great player,” he told RMC. “But I do not think we have the same characteristics.”

“I still have everything to prove. Maybe by continuing to work, I will reach his level one day.”

He also gave an insight into how his deadline day move progressed. The striker speaks little English, so when the phone call from Van Gaal came, the teen had to pass the phone to his Mother in order to translate.

“The coach wanted me and that’s what made the difference.” said Martial.

“Originally, I was declared untransferrable. I thought I was staying at Monaco. But when I knew about this offer I didn’t hesitate a second and it was done quickly.”

“I really wanted to continue to play in the Champions League. Van Gaal called and spoke to my mother who did the translation.”

“When I arrived in Manchester, [Van Gaal] talked at length with me and told me that it would be difficult to earn my place. He is always behind me and that’s really important for a player my age.”

“I was amazed at the welcome I got at Manchester United,” he said. “Everyone came to see me on the first day.

“They all wanted to speak with me, even if it was difficult because of the language barrier.

“It’s going well for me right now. I’ve been involved in the games and scored some goals. To continue like this it’s important to show Louis van Gaal that he can rely on me.”

“I knew that I was going to be the second striker. I had this chance to score quickly against Liverpool and after that he gave me my chance.”
