Manchester United vs Chelsea: Match Report and Player Ratings

Manchester United played out a 0-0 draw with Chelsea at Old Trafford in what was a rather disappointing result.

The Blues were without a striker in their entire squad, and gave United very little to think about going forward. Eden Hazard started the game as Chelsea’s false no.9, but the Belgian winger failed to make any impact whatsoever.

United started the game on the attack, and came close to taking the lead after just 2 minutes through Juan Mata’s brilliant effort which smashed against the crossbar. Anthony Martial terrorised Ivanovic on the left hand side throughout the game – and almost put United ahead when he beat the Serbian defender inside the box and saw his effort smash against the post.

Chelsea had their chances in the game, and David De Gea certainly saved United from going behind on various occasions. The Spaniard might well have saved his managers job as well.

Van Gaal has been under huge scrutiny in recent times, and today’s result means his side have now gone 8 games without a win. The Dutchman allowed his United team to play a lot more freely tonight, but the Red Devils still only managed 2 shots on target – despite dominating possession.

Wayne Rooney responded to being dropped against Stoke City by giving a good performance. The United skipper had a brilliant chance to win the game late on, but failed to find the target. The 30-year-old was also lucky not to be sent off towards the end of the game, after a clumsy challenge on Oscar.

Here’s how we rated the Manchester United starting XI:

De Gea – 9

Young – 7

Smalling – 7

Blind – 6.5

Darmian – 6

Schweinsteiger – 7

Schneiderlin – 7

Mata – 7

Herrera – 6.5

Martial – 8

Rooney – 8
