Manchester United 3 – 1 Sunderland – Match Report and Player Ratings

Manchester United made it four league wins in a row with a 3-1 victory over Sunderland on Monday afternoon. The win means United are level on points with 5th placed Spurs, whilst Sunderland remain in the relegation zone.

United played well and thoroughly deserved the victory over a rather defensive David Moyes side. United dominated possession and had 25 shots on goal, however, in the first half it was only Daley Blind’s 40th minute strike that separated the sides. The Dutchman played at left back and scored a rare goal for the club, assisted by an in form Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The second half started slow and at times it looked like the Manchester United 1-1 curse might come back to bite, as Sunderland knocked on the door several times. However, it was Ibrahimovic who put the Red’s 2 ahead when he slotted home an 82nd mintue – a fine Paul Pogba assist this time. Substitute Henrikh Mkhitaryan came on and once again added that special something to the game, his scorpion-kick put the icing on the cake and made it 3-0 to United, Ibrahimovic adding his second assist of the game. Replays suggest Mkhitaryan was offside, but the Armenian will take it.

The game ended with a Fabio Borini screamer in the 91st minute to make it 3-1, but it wasn’t enough for Moyes’ men to take anything from the game.

It was a fantastic result for Mourinho’s side, and once again it was a great performance from all involved. 2017 certainly looks like a good year ahead.
