Manchester To Spend £45m To Reinforce Defense

LVG has already laid out a plan for this summer’s transfer window when Manchester plan on filling in all the gaps noticed throughout the season. According to Metro, the first players on the list are Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne and Lazio’s Stefan de Vrij. Both are valued at around £25million each with Lazio rumored to already have refused a £19 million from Old Trafford. Clyne is closer to Manchester as he already refused a new deal from his current club.

Even though both show great potential and are seen by most experts as the next top defenders in Europe, there are still some aspects to consider. First, there is De Vrij’s precarious physical state. The Dutchman who is only 23 has already gathered a long list of injuries with the most recent one picked up this April. Since 2011 he has had Malleolar problems and heel spur problems every single season. This happened while playing for Feyenoord and Lazio which are nowhere near as worn out in terms of matches per season as Manchester are. The roughness of the Premier League would also be a problem for De Vrij who although looking solid, might get injured a lot.

Secondly, there would be Clyne’s constant need to leave the defensive line and aid the attack. Manchester need someone to help defend rather than just lead attacking raids. The 24 year old looks more like a winger at times rather than a defender which might get LVG to think twice before making a bid. Manchester does not lack offensive power down the wings and would probably be better off focusing on a striker rather than an offensive full-back.

What do you think is Clyne a must sign for van Gaal!
