Depay To Play As A Striker?

New signing Memphis Depay has already wowed United fans with his blistering pace and solid physique, but now the 21-year-old Dutchman could be set to play a more advanced role for his new club and replace Robin van Persie as a striker for the club.

Depay played as a left winger for PSV Eindhoven and managed 22 goals in 30 league appearances, making him the top scorer.

Upon signing for United, Memphis insisted he is capable of playing anywhere in a forward role and has set his sights on continuing his goal scoring form. The Dutchman also admitted he is under pressure to perform for Louis van Gaal, a manager who gave him his chance at international level and now in Manchester.

“I think you can see what he expects from me,” Depay said.

“Before I played on the left wing, and I thought I am a winger, but where he puts me, it’s on the boss.”

“I believe I can score a lot of goals. I will work on it. I’m excited to do my job for Manchester United.”

“I’m excited about scoring goals and giving assists. I’m a striker.”

Louis van Gaal also recently admitted that Depay could be deployed as a striker for the side, and that the club may not replace recently departed Van Persie and Falcao.

“It’s one of the reasons we bought Memphis.” Van Gaal said.

“He played striker in the Dutch team and learns very quickly.”

“He can play in different positions. We have to wait and see in which position he can give the most benefit to the team.”
